Updates for October 18

Hello DeseretNews.com readers. It’s been a while since we’ve provided an update on changes we are making to the site so I thought I’d summarize a few.

Issues

First, let me mention a recently resolved issue. While most visitors never experienced this, occasionally one of our servers would reset its connection with a visitor’s web browser. This resulted in a login form, comment form, email subscription form or registration form failing to respond properly. In very rare occasions someone might see an error screen saying “connection reset by peer.”

This was fixed on Tuesday, October 16. Those of you experiencing problems with forms on our site should now have a better experience. If you still experience problems registering, logging in, subscribing to our email updates or commenting on a story please contact us in one of 3 ways:

  • Click on the “Feedback” link in the site footer
  • Click on the “Submit a Tip” link in the header and change the form subject to “Site Technical Issues”
  • Send an email to feedback@deseretnews.com

Recent Improvements

In recent weeks we’ve introduced the following to the DesNews site:

  • Game box scores for high school sports stories and college football game stories
  • College football schedules and scoreboards for BYU, UofU and USU
  • “From the web” stories where DesNews writers weigh in on stories breaking on other sites and then link you to those original stories
  • Expanded social sharing – you’ll see share icons at the top and bottom of stories and soon they will appear throughout our high school sports tables
  • Filters and search on our Utah high school sports leaders tables – these will soon be applied to other high school stats tables
  • The Utah voter guide which contains up-to-date candidate information for most Utah political races
  • In addition to top stories in each section, the home page now contains a queue of recently released stories
  • Our daily and weekly email updates are reformatted and easier to read
  • You’ll notice more ways to see stories related to the one you are reading
  • Updated iPhone and iPad apps (these are a major improvement over the originals)
  • We’ve improved our internal site search, however, it is still not perfect, which brings me to…

Coming improvements

  • We are planning to overhaul our internal search to improve search results and make it more intuitive when searching recent articles and archive items
  • New mobile site
  • New Android app
  • Expanded search and filtering on high school sports statistics tables
